When the dark velvet of the evening spreads over the day and the snow shines on the roofs of the stalls illuminated by a thousand lights… that’s when the Christmas market on Marienplatz, the Christkindlmarkt, lives moments of magical enchantment! And it is not a coincidence that the inhabitants of Munich and travelers from all over the world go there every year to be enchanted by the Christmas atmosphere of the Bavarian capital!
On the Friday preceding the first Sunday of Advent a crowd gathers inMarienplatz – in the heart of the city – and wait impatiently for 5.00 pm, when the burgomaster solemnly inaugurates the Christmas market. The peak of emotion is reached when the Christmas tree, which rises to the sky with its thirty meters high, shines with 2,500 candles and dominates the 140 stalls.

In the heart of the old city you will breathe traditional craftsmanship, Christmas decorations stalls for all tastes, hand-painted wooden figurines, floral decorations to hang on the door or windows of your home … and to warm up from the cold you can taste the excellent Glühwein (mulled wine) or taste the typical Christmas sweets, such as Lebkuchen, spiced and marzipan sweets, or Stollen, the typical German Christmas cake, toasted almonds and donuts.
The atmosphere is truly magical, from other times, a riot of lights, ancient melodies and flavors.
Do not miss the Nativity Market, the Heavenly Workshop for children and the Krampus race. The Rindermarkt , a few steps from Marienplatz, is one of the most important German crib markets, those in search of inspiration can admire in the Prunkhof of the Town Hall the historical nativity scene created in 1954 by Reinhold Zellner. You can also live the experience of climbing on the ChristkindlTram, for a pleasant tour of the city with mulled wine and music, the ride passes through some of the most beautiful attractions, including the illuminated Maxmonument.
The origins of the Munich Christmas Market date back to the 14th century with the so-called St. Nicholas Markets, whose feast falls on 6 December. The first written evidence dates back to 1642 with a market set up in Kaufingerstrasse. After several moves, it found its final location in Marienplatz. In front of the church of St. Peter, the nativity market is set up with wooden figurines made by hand in Bavaria and Tyrol and other handicrafts. Every evening at 5.30 pm ancient and modern Christmas melodies echo from the balcony of the Town Hall. Do not miss the animated showcase of the Kaufhof department store, also in Marienplatz, the collection of cribs kept in the Bayerisches Nationalmuseum (Sunday admission for 1 Euro) … and the other markets in the historic center!
